The Garmin Vista HCx Handheld GPS Navigation system is an amazing bit of kit! It has been designed with a high sensitive receiver to hold a GPS signal even in the toughest of environments.
The Garmin Vista HCx combines a bright colour screen, barometric altimeter, electronic compass, micro SD card and automatic routing to ensure that it provides the information you need, wherever you take it.
Using the latest high sensitivity WAAS enabled GPS receiver the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx will locate your position quickly and precisely AND maintain its GPS location even in the most difficult of terrains.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re in the middle of a deep wood, in the valleys, or near tall buildings or trees, the Garmin Vista HCx will help you find your way regardless.
I particularily like the built in electronic compass that provides you with bearings, even if you’re stood still. You will even know your exact altitude with the balometric altimeter which constantly measures pressure.

One Terrific Design. I use mine for bike touring. It does it all: if I arrive in a distant city and have to drive to my hotel, I use it to navigate in the car. Once I get to the ride start, I put the HCx on the bike and it shows me a map of nearby terrain. I normally use the 0.2 mile or 0.3 mile scale while biking to show the nearby streets. I can upload the recent tracks to my computer. And, I can plot out new routes and download them to the GPS. It works all day on a pair of rechargeable AAs. It works overseas (Europe, South America), and it’s even fun to take on a train trip. It shows nearby restaurants, hotels, bike shops, gas stations, etc.
Be sure to buy the CD of City Navigator instead of the SD card or the download. That will allow you to set your own routes on the computer and download to the GPS. I have lost two over the years and I’m now on my third. I just have not found a better design.Review By: Average Joe Buckaroo, Dec 2010
I use this for two purposes. Foremost is for marking waypoints when I am hiking about and want to record the location of observations. Its excellent for that. I download these with GPS babel in GPX format so I have text records of my waypoints, and also use it with National Geographic TOPO maps on my computer. I’ve never installed additional maps and yet it has helped me, by turning the tracking on and comparing the bends in map to the bends in paper maps to figure out exactly where I was on some obscure dirt road in Nevada more than once. I also use it for casual, not die-hard, geocaching with my kids for occassional fun. For these purposes, it is excellent and I have used in both North and South America. I like the small size, light weight, and its not too hard to use once you learn how it works (navigating menus, etc). I don’t use it as a primary navigation device for my car (although I have in backcountry when needed).
